Asked Questions Beta 1,3/1,6 Glucan Question and Answer Discussion with Frank M. Jordan, Beta Glucan Researcher with four Immunological Patents involving Beta Glucan in process and Author of "Beta Glucan, Immunition to Win Your Body War!"
Q: What is Beta glucan? Insoluble particulate Beta glucan taken orally, in contrast to water soluble for injection, is marketed as a dietary supplement that nutritionally empowers the immune system to maintain or build up and, when necessary, renew our body's immune defenses. An immune system in peak condition provides the most protective disease defense, faster recoveries, enhanced shielding from radiation damage plus environmental hazards and an extension of life associated with good health. We all seek a quality, not just quantity of life! Beta glucan also has powerful antioxidant attributes, with heightened free-radical scavenging activity to nutritionally enable the immune system to fight back against health invaders (pathogens) such as fungus, bacteria, viruses and parasites. Technically named Beta 1,3/1,6 glucan, Beta glucan is a long-chained polysaccharide molecule derived from the cell wall of common Baker's yeast. An extremely potent and medical school researched form is dSM glucan, which is micronized and processed in a proprietary manner to prevent certain negative characteristics exhibited in other glucans that can significantly diminish the immune response potentiation. Beta glucan is orally effective, safe, non-toxic and optimally effective when delivered in small particle sizes (micronized) for peak absorption, ingestion rate and saturation into the immune system. This translates that the product is absorbed to a high percentage in your immune system, not just passed through and expelled by the body as large particle glucans, and ingested faster by more immune cells to go to work to attack and fight back against health invaders that constantly attempt to steal our good health. Evidence now shows Beta 1,3/1,6 glucan is, from an evolutionary point of view, the most widely and most commonly observed activator in nature for the most ancient cell in the immune cascade, the Macrophage. The immune response potentiation of Beta glucan crosses kingdom lines and has been found in all branches of the animal, bird, fish and plant kingdoms. Beta glucan will help you, your pets and your plants! Recent independent experiments in 2000-2001 at the University of Nevada School of Medicine under the direction of Kenneth Hunter, Sc.D. confirmed prior research completed at Baylor College of Medicine in the laboratory of Professor Phil Wyde, Ph.D. as to the oral effectiveness of Beta glucan in activating immunity. Macrophages in both studies significantly increased their immune response (phagocyte) activity in mice fed with Beta-1,3/1,6-glucan. The Beta-1,3/1,6-glucan used in the University of Nevada School of Medicine research was dSM Glucan provided by Nutritional Supply Corporation (NSC). These test results indicate Beta 1,3/1,6 glucan is a unique and very valuable oral immune activator, available most effectively as a micronized oral dietary supplement with particle sizes of 1 micron average or less that will not reaggregate after water contact during digestion.
Q: Are the effects of Beta-1,3/1,6-glucan
backed by scientific research? "dSM Glucan has been shown to enhance the envelopment and digestion (phagocytosis) of pathogenic microorganisms that cause infectious disease. The Beta-1,3/1,6 glucans additionally enhance the ability of Macrophages, one of the most important cells in the immune system, to kill tumor cells. Laboratory studies have revealed the new dSM Glucan is significantly effective at activating Macrophages, and via the Macrophages, in turn the entire immune cascade including T-Cells and B-Cells." Research Summary Release, January 2001, issued jointly by The University of Nevada School of Medicine and Nutritional Supply Corporation. "Beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, is a potent Macrophage stimulant and is beneficial in the therapy of experimental bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases." William Browder, M.D., Dept. of Surgery and Physiology, Tulane University School of Medicine "A cascade of interactions and reactions initiated by Macrophage regulatory factors can be envisioned to occur and to eventuate in conversion of the glucan treated host to an arsenal of defense." Joyce K. Czop, Ph.D., Dept. of Rheumatology and Immunology, Harvard Medical School "Glucan (Beta-1,3) has been shown to enhance Macrophage function dramatically, and to increase nonspecific host resistance to a variety of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections." M.L. Patchen, Ph.D., Dept. of Experimental Hematology and Radiation Sciences, Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute.
Q: Who should use Beta glucan to enhance the
immune system? An enhanced and peak immune response is a key to success for anyone aging, subject to physical or emotional stress, with a chronic illness, subject to colds and flu, arthritis, diabetes, skin disorders, cancer, heart risk or conditions, lung disorders, allergies, asthma, transplants, environmental hazards from work, school or travel (flying in particular), in radiation treatment, or any attacks classified as bacterial, fungal, viral or from parasites. Bottom line, everyone should take Beta glucan daily with the amount dependent on whether Beta glucan is taken for daily nutritional maintenance of good health or as an attempt to correct a compromised or hyperactive immune system.
Q: What else can I do to help improve my
immune system?
Q: What is the proper dosage of Beta glucan?
Q: Why are some Beta glucans so much more
expensive than others? Very few Beta glucan products on the market pay the extra expense of true micronization and only one to date incurs the expense to assure the glucan is disaggregated, meaning simply it will not "clump" back to a larger size when multiple particles exposed to water reaggregate in the digestive process. Thus the range of prices is from $9.95 to $94.95, but you get what you pay for and Beta glucan is no exception. Questions to ask a manufacturer of a commercial Beta glucan product: (1) Has your company sponsored medical school research in the United States under U.S. Government guidelines on the Beta glucan in the bottle being sold retail, or is the Beta glucan in your product purchased from a third party wholesale for private branding and the research quoted from sources other than manufacturer sponsored research? (2) Are any doctors in immunology directly associated with development of the product in the bottle? If so, who and with what organization? When and how? (3) Are any consultants in immunology to the World Health Organization associated with direct product development or research on the specific product in the bottle? (4) Has anyone on staff authored a definitive book on Beta glucan? (5) Do company products focus on Beta glucan or is the Beta glucan product just one of 100's or 1,000's with little specific personnel knowledge about what it is; what it does and what distinguishes a marginal product from an outstanding product? Obviously, the more positive responses, the higher the probabilities that the product you are buying is the best quality available based on current specific scientific research on the product in the bottle. If a company will not or cannot answer these questions positively, dial again! Almost all Beta glucans selling very inexpensively are either basically fiber derived from grain (Beta 1,4 glucan), or are very large particle sizes with minimal, if any, processing to optimize immune activation. Some are even whole yeast cell walls without the Beta glucan extracted at all. High milligram dosages, larger particle sizes and cheap prices are not better in Beta glucans. Less is more if processed correctly. Don't be shy. Ask questions and if you do not get good answers, go to another manufacturer. In summary, you will pay 5 to 10 times more for properly processed micronized Beta 1,3/1,6 glucan from yeast cell wall, but it is probably 10 to 1,000 times more effective than the inexpensively processed and generally ineffective Beta glucans that, for the most part, go right through your system and never enter or minimally potentiate the immune response. dSM Glucan is scientifically proven to be an absolutely top quality form of Beta glucan, although also one of the most expensive. But you do not want cheap, low-grade fuel to empower your most precious asset - your body. A guideline to always follow: Where your health is concerned, 2nd best is not good enough! Be informed and make a correct decision based on facts and research; not marketing hype.
