Rene Caisse's herbal formula contains four commonly occurring herbs:

Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetossella)
Sheep Sorrel belongs to the buckwheat family and grows wild throughout most of the world. It is considered to be a common weed. The entire plant may be harvested to be used in Essiac. This plant has been a folk remedy for cancer for centuries in Europe and America. It has been noted by researchers to break down tumors and also to alleviate some chronic degenerative diseases. It contains high amounts of A & B complex, C, D, E, K, P and Vitamin U. It's also rich in minerals and has trace amounts of copper, iodine, manganese, and zinc. This combination nourishes all the glands in the body. It also contains carotenoids, chlorophyll, citric, malic, oxalic, tartaric and tannic acids. Chlorophyll aids in carrying oxygen throughout the bloodstream. Cancer cannot live in the presence of oxygen.

Burdock Root ( Arctium Lappa)
The burdock plant is a member of the thistle family. The root of the burdock plant is harvested from only the first year plants, in the fall. The burdock root is a powerful blood purifier. It promotes the flow of bile and eliminates excess fluid as well as clears congestion in the respiratory and lymphatic circulatory systems. It also contains high amounts of chromium, cobalt, iron and magnesium, potassium, and other vital nutrients. Its principal ingredient, Unulin, helps to strengthen the vital organs, such as the liver, pancreas, and spleen.

Slippery Elm (Ulcus fulva)
The inner bark of the slippery elm tree has a history of use as a food supplement and herbal remedy. The powdered bark is still being used today as a food extender and additive because of its rich vitamin and mineral content. It is a favorite shade tree found throughout Canada and the U.S. Only the inner bark of the tree is used to make Essiac. Slippery elm has the ability to strengthen the organs, tissues and mucous membranes, especially the stomach and lungs. It promotes fast healing of cuts burns ulcers and wounds.

Turkey Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum)
The Turkey Rhubarb is a member of the rhubarb family and its roots have more potency than our native rhubarb. It is grown in China and harvested when the plant is at least six years old.

The rhubarb root stimulates the secretion of bile into the intestines. It also stimulates the gall duct to expel toxic waste. It is especially helpful in cleansing the liver. It has a gentle laxative action.

The formula used to prepare Essiac is the original formula presented to the Royal Cancer Commission in 1937 and was found by them to be "a cure for cancer"

Later on Rene added small amounts of four other herbs to her basic four-herb formula. They were Kelp, Red Clover, Blessed Thistle, and watercress.

What Essiac does:

  • Regulates cholesterol levels by transforming sugar into energy

  • Makes bones and joints, ligaments, lungs strong and less vulnerable to stress
  • Nourishes and stimulates the brain and nervous system
  • Expels mucus clearing the lungs.
  • Helps eliminate heavy metal and toxins in the tissues like aluminum & mercury poisoning
  • Purifies the blood
  • Increases red blood cell production
  • Protects the body against radiation damage
  • Helps destroy parasites in the digestive tract.
  • Prevents the buildup of fatty deposits in heart kidney and liver.
  • Assists the liver in producing lecithin, which forms the myelin sheath that encapsulates the nerve fibers

How to prepare Essiac tea:
We find it works well to brew the tea at night and let it steep till morning.

  • Heat 5 cups of distilled or filtered water to a rolling boil in a stainless steel or glass container.

  • Stir is one pack (9 oz) of herbal tea. Cover tightly and boil for 10 to 12 minutes
  • Remove from heat, scrape herbs from the sides and lid and stir herbs back into liquid.
  • Allow covered pot to sit for 10 to 12 hours.

The next morning:

  • Add water to bring it back to 36 -38 ozs. of liquid.

  • Reheat to the point of boiling (do not boil), and then allow to cool.
  • Strain with a fine stainless steel strainer and pour into a sterile glass jar.
  • Tightly cap and refrigerate.
  • There are no preservatives in this tea. If any mold develops, discard the tea.

*You can sterilize caps with a 3% solution of food-grade hydrogen peroxide.

To make the 3% solution, mix 1 oz of 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide with 11 ounces of sodium-free distilled water. Let soak for 5 minutes. If food-grade Hydrogen peroxide is not available, use one teaspoon of plain Clorox to one gallon of distilled water.

DOSAGE:
TAKE TWO TIMES A DAY;
OR MORE IF YOU PREFER:

  • Boil 2 oz of filtered water (do not microwave) and add 2 oz of tea. (shake bottle well before using)

  • Sip slowly while warm.
  • Drink on an empty stomach, so it is more easily absorbed.
  • Take once first thing in the morning and take again in the evening before retiring.

  • Its best to have no food for one hour before and two hours after taking the tea, if possible.
